The book ends with the mice experiencing a tough winter, and then being inspired to carry on by a poem Frederick has created that grew out of his meditations when his family members thought he was being lazy. Lionni continued to work as an artist until just before his death in 1999. Frederick explains to his skeptical family that he IS working by quietly gathering imaginary sun rays for the cold winter days to come. He worked in many media including drawing, painting, sculpture and photography. Then comes the Summer who paints in the flowers. Lionni always thought of himself as an artist. When the mice are snowed in, when all the nuts and berries and corn are gone, Frederick produces his supplies evocations of the sun and the spectrum, and a poem telling of the four field mice who live in the sky: 'One is the Springmouse who turns on the showers.

Lionni was a four-time Caldecott Honor Winner for Inch by Inch (1961), Swimmy (1964), Frederick the Mouse (1968), and Alexander and the Wind-Up Mouse (1970).

During his career he wrote and illustrated over forty children's books. In 1959, Lionni, inspired by a story he had told his grandchlldren, he wrote his first children's book, Little Blue and Little Yellow. His economics studies moved into the background as he began to exhibit his drawings and artwork.
